Trip Information of MT. AMA DABLAM EXPEDITION

The best times for the Mt. Ama Dablam climb are spring and autumn/fall. Spring begins from March to May, and autumn begins from September and ends in November. Springtime has longer sunshine hours, one of the best seasons for treks and mountaineering adventures. As well as for stunning views of the Himalayan Mountain ranges, cold mornings, within the shade, and at night. Late afternoon can get overcast with snowfall sometimes.

Autumn begins in September and ends in November, one of the best times for treks and climbs. Most days are clear for views and walks, 5 p.m. Days are much clearer with sunshine and snowfall sometimes above 3,000 m high on walks and climbs. Cold mornings, in shade, and the night times, but with clear starry nights. Interested climbers can venture during winter from December to February, despite the freezing temperatures. Most days are fine with crystal clear blue sky for the climb and spectacular views of the surrounding snow-capped mountains.

In winter, the main advantage is less risk of avalanches, the snow gets harder to step on. Few groups of trekkers and mountaineers to encounter. It is cold in the morning, late afternoon, and nighttime with a minimum of -10° C. to a maximum of 15-18° Celsius. The sunrise is from 6 a.m. and sets by 5 p.m. But one of the pleasant times to enjoy with a few groups of travelers
to come across, and expect snowfall.

The Ama Dablam name comes from the native Sherpa language of Tibetan origin, which means Mother with jewel/gem box. The jewel box refers to the South Face of Ama Dablam. One can witness a big block of ice that hangs on the neck of Mt. Ama Dablam.

Mt. Ama Dablam was first ascended by the joint team of Anglo-American-New Zealand in 1961. Since then, the mountain has drawn many worldwide mountaineers and has been climbed from various routes to the summit. The normal, and original route is the South West Ridge, a straightforward way to reach the summit. It also allows, with a reasonable level of technical difficulty, for the climbers to make the last push to the top.

After a good preparation with the best logistic support. The climb requires three more camps besides the base camp. This makes the climb more accessible with enough practice, exercise, and acclimatization.

Camp I at 5,700 m/ 18,800 ft.
From Base Camp, climb towards old grassy moraine ridges, situated east on a broad saddle, near Mingbo La Pass. After the saddle, the climb heads north towards rocky ground and above boulders. Then the climb reaches the ridge below Pt. 5705, the site of Camp I. The area or platforms accommodate only a maximum of five tents. The distance from base camp to Camp I takes more than 4 hours of climbing on a fine day.

Camp II at 5,950 m/19,512 ft.
After Camp I, the climb heads towards a rocky bowl, which is quite tricky. When it is covered in deep snow, below the two rock fingers, move on to the ridge proper. From here, the route leads higher, with rock climbing of a severe standard, with steps. The grade VS (USA 5.6), then reaches Camp II, located atop a yellow tower. It provides one of the hardest pitches with a climb of VS / Hard VS (5.8).

Camp III at 6,200 m/20,341 ft.
After overcoming the tough section to Camp II, the next morning takes you to Camp III. It is about a few hours of climbing over a mixed ridge of ice and snow, and needs fixed ropes. The route skirts over a red rocky bluff in the east, reaching a ramp line towards a gray tower. The climb continues over the ramp (some stone fall danger), then reaches an amphitheater.

Adventure then leads you towards a broad gully between the grey tower and the lower rock buttress. The final climb leads to a snow slope at ‘Santa’s Grotto’. The start of the mushroom ridge, where Camp III is established for the final summit bid. Depending on the weather conditions. Camp III is close to Kangtiga Peak.

The Final Climb to Mt. Ama Dablam Summit 6,814 m / 22,355 feet.
Most climbers proceed early before dawn or at midnight. The calm early morning with no strong wind, the ice and snow are hard to step, for the final ascent. The climb towards the mushroom ridge and crevasse in the upper face offers a nice emergency bivvy site. The climb leads over a snow/ice slope to the right. The route to the summit leads to a mixed ground, reaching towards a hanging glacier. From the ice crest, a final push brings you on top of the Mt. Ama Dablam summit.

From the summit of Ama Dablam, enjoy the Grand Vista! Along with the sunrise, with mind-blowing views. The gigantic peaks of the Khumbu range surround the summit with views of Everest, Lhotse, and Nuptse. The views include Makalu and Baruntse in the east. After a successful and safe triumph, descend safely back to base camp. Using the lower Camps and carrying the camping gear back to base camp.

Please note that mountaineers who are interested and planning for major 7,000 m or 8,000 m peaks. Mt. Ama Dablam will be the best option for a climbing exercise. Mt. Ama Dablam provides all types of technical obstacles for climbers to experience
