Itinerary of Upper Mustang Trek

These markets are serving as a meeting point for traders, locals and tourist for centuries. After exploring a heart of Kathmandu, we begin our journey towards the beautiful city of Pokhara in the morning. From kathmandu, We have options for transportation to reach Pokhara depending on your budget. You can take a drive to pokhara which will take you around 7-8 hours depending on the road condition, traffic, weather and the route you take. If you take a flight from Kathmandu to pokhara it will take approximately 30 minutes which will be more easy and efficient. Though you ride or take a flight, you will enjoy the majestic landscape throughout the journey, adding more adventures for you Upper mustang Trek.

After a night spent enjoying the beautiful city of Pokhara, we will commence our journey towards the gateway of Upper Mustang—Jomsom—and on to Kagbeni. We’ll take a short flight from Pokhara to Jomsom, which will take approximately 20 minutes. During the flight, enjoy breathtaking aerial views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain peaks, along with other stunning peaks.

From Kagbeni, we will begin our trek towards Chele. The journey takes us through the stunning landscapes of the Mustang region, with rugged terrain, traditional villages, and spectacular views of the surrounding mountains. As we ascend, we’ll experience the unique charm of the area, with its mix of Tibetan culture and natural beauty.

From Chele, we continue our trek towards Syanbochen. The trail takes us through scenic landscapes, passing through narrow valleys and small Tibetan-style villages. As we ascend, the terrain becomes more rugged, and the views of the surrounding mountains grow even more spectacular. The path offers glimpses of the region’s unique culture, with its prayer flags, chortens, and monasteries dotting the landscape. The journey is both challenging and rewarding, with each step bringing us closer to the heart of Upper Mustang.

From Syanbochen, we continue our journey towards Ghaymi. The trail gradually ascends through a blend of barren hills and lush green valleys, offering magnificent views of the surrounding mountains. As we pass through small Tibetan villages, we get a glimpse into the local way of life, with traditional mud-brick houses and prayer wheels along the path. The journey is serene yet awe-inspiring, with each step bringing us closer to the hidden beauty of Upper Mustang. Upon reaching Ghaymi, we can relax and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of this charming village.

Leaving Ghaymi, we continue our trek towards Charang. The trail takes us through vast, open landscapes with spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and high desert terrain. As we walk, we’ll pass by ancient monasteries, chortens, and vibrant fields, all while experiencing the peaceful and remote atmosphere of the region. The path gradually ascends, providing stunning panoramas of Upper Mustang’s unique environment. Upon reaching Charang, a charming village nestled in a valley, we can explore its fascinating Tibetan culture and historical significance.

From Charang, we continue our journey toward Lo-Manthang, the ancient walled city and capital of Upper Mustang. The trail offers dramatic views as we cross high desert plateaus, pass through scattered villages, and witness the unique landscape of this remote region. The route gradually ascends, and as we approach Lo-Manthang, we are greeted by its impressive wall, centuries-old monasteries, and traditional Tibetan architecture. Lo-Manthang holds a rich cultural heritage, and its isolation has preserved its charm. Upon arrival, we’ll have the chance to explore its vibrant culture, historic sites, and the fascinating Tibetan Buddhist influence that pervades the city.

Lo Manthang is the capital of the Mustang district and it is also known as the Forbidden Kingdom because it was only opened to westerners in 1992. Before, it was considered as a kingdom and now it still reflects the same ancient era. This place is a canvas of many untold stories and you will get the opportunity to experience this region in person.  The township has many monasteries, chhortens, Mani-Walls, and colorful prayer flags flutter above the houses. The ancient traditions and culture of holy prayer are still preserved by Lamas and Monks inside the different monasteries of this region, which are not only centers of religious activity but also places of cultural heritage. Lo Manthang is indeed close to Tibet in aspects of geography, religion, ethics, and culture.

Leaving Lo-Manthang, we begin our trek towards Dhakmar. The trail takes us through a rugged yet beautiful landscape, with dramatic cliffs, unique rock formations, and vast, arid valleys. As we descend, the scenery shifts, offering sweeping views of the surrounding mountains and the stark beauty of Upper Mustang. Along the way, we’ll pass by ancient monasteries and small villages that reflect the rich Tibetan heritage of the region. Dhakmar itself is known for its distinctive red cliffs, and upon arrival, we can take time to enjoy its peaceful, remote atmosphere and stunning surroundings.

From Dhakmar, we begin our descent towards Ghiling. The trail winds through barren landscapes, with striking views of the towering cliffs and high desert terrain. As we trek, we pass through small villages and fields, experiencing the peaceful rhythm of life in Upper Mustang. The route gradually leads us through lush, green valleys, offering a refreshing contrast to the arid surroundings. Ghiling, a picturesque village nestled at the foot of the mountains, is known for its beautiful scenery and welcoming atmosphere, making it the perfect place to rest and soak in the tranquil surroundings.

From Ghiling, we continue our trek back towards Chele. The path takes us through a blend of steep ascents and descents, offering ever-changing views of the vast Mustang landscape. As we traverse the rugged terrain, we pass through small villages, cross winding rivers, and enjoy panoramic vistas of the surrounding mountains. The trail leads us through remote valleys and high desert plateaus, providing a final opportunity to experience the serenity and beauty of Upper Mustang before we reach Chele, where our journey concludes.

From Chele, we begin our descent towards Jomsom. The trail winds through scenic valleys and gentle slopes, offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains and the Kali Gandaki River below. As we make our way through traditional villages and fields, we’re reminded of the rugged beauty and remote charm of the Mustang region. The journey culminates in Jomsom, a lively town known for its apple orchards and as a gateway to the rest of the Annapurna region. Upon arrival, you can take in the relaxed atmosphere and prepare for your onward journey.

From Jomsom, we take a scenic flight back to Pokhara. The 20-minute flight offers breathtaking aerial views of the mighty Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges, with their snow-capped peaks standing tall against the clear blue sky. As the plane soars over deep valleys and lush hillsides, you’ll get a unique perspective of the rugged terrain you’ve just trekked through. The flight is a peaceful and memorable way to wrap up your adventure in Upper Mustang, bringing you back to the serene lakeside city of Pokhara.

From Pokhara, you have the option to either fly or drive back to Kathmandu. The scenic flight takes about 25 minutes, offering stunning views of the Himalayas and lush valleys below as you sore back to the bustling capital.
