The overland journey begins from Kathmandu towards the north mid-west through Rasuwa district in between Langtang and Ganesh Himal ranges. Then entering Tibet at Gyirong or Kyirong the frontier town in Tibet close to the Nepal border of Rasuwagadhi. From Kyirong begins the real adventure journey starts driving into the heart of scenic and wide Tibetan Plateau. Reaching the sacred Lake Manasarover, a huge serene lake to enjoy the views and worships of the holy lake.
From Manasarover Lake the adventure takes you to the starting point of the circuit, Kora or Parikrama of Mt. Kailash. The walk follows from the west of
Mt. Kailash at another sacred spot of Taboche. The first-day hike follows the streams uphill to Dhiraphuk, located North of Mt. Kailash. After the beginning of the first day’s hikes, leaving Dhiraphuk takes you high on top of Droma-La or Doma-La. Revered as a holy spot festooned with Buddhist colorful prayer flags, offered by the pilgrims. As well as items offering for the guardian angel Droma, stands close in front of Mt. Kailash North Face.

From Zutulphuk the last leg of the hike takes you close to Darchen Town, and then on drives towards Kyirong. After driving through Saga, leaving the high and dry plateau to reach into green vegetation at Kyirong. For the last overnight stop around Tibet/China, the next morning an exciting overland journey to enter Nepal. The drive follows on winding downhill back to the hustle and bustle city of Kathmandu.

Itinerary of Ten Days Kailash Tour From Kathmandu To Kathmandu
Day 01 Drive to Gyirong/Kyirong 2,890 m via Syabrubesi
Depart from the hotel after early breakfast, for an interesting and scenic overland journey to enter Tibet / China. An exciting drive from Kathmandu city and the valley outskirt, heading north towards Langtang and Ganesh Himal ranges.
The drive takes you uphill through several towns and farm villages, to reach Dhunche, the headquarters town of Rasuwa district. From here the road follows on winding downhill to Syabrubesi village, close en route to the borders of Nepal and Tibet / China. Syabrubesi is also the starting and ending point of various trekking around the Langtang and Ganesh Himal regions. From here the drive leads on a rough dirt road following a river upstream towards Rasuwagadhi.
The frontier of Nepal with check-post, after going through the visa formalities then walk towards Tibet/China. Our native Tibetan guide and drivers meet and receive you. For a short drive to Gyirong/Kyirong count town, after completing the visa process and security.

After a pleasant time at Kyirong with a rest day, the adventure begins with a morning drive following a river past Kyirong. The drive then enters a river gorge for an hour or more before reaching a wide and dry Tibetan Plateau. As well as close views of the great turquoise colored Lake of Paigut Tsho. The journey continues heading west crossing over a few passes to cross a bridge over Brahmaputra / Yarlung Tsho River. This river is from the glacial source of Mt. Kailash, after the bridge, reaches Saga for the overnight stop.
A moderate newly develop town, slowly growing into a city. Where the road from Shigatse, Lhasa cities and Nylam joins.
At Saga check into a nice hotel, lodge, or guest house, and have time to explore the local cultures and activities.

HotelDay 04 Drive to Manasarover Lake
From Saga on the road to holy Mt. Kailash, a morning drive leads past Saga town then over a pass. The road heads downhill to enter a vast south-west of the Tibetan Great Plateau. The drive skirts around the flat plain past a few Yak herder settlements with large tents. The drive continues towards further west-facing views of distant white peaks that outline the Nepal and Tibet borders.
After a few hours, the drive then heads past the windblown town of Paryang, the road follows through small villages. Then reaching a small valley with green meadows by the Sum-Chu River. This means three streams join the Brahmaputra/ Yarlung Tsangpo River. From here drive climbs over Maium-La Pass at 5,050 m and then towards the eastern side of Lake Manasarover. The drive leads through Horpa facing views of Mt. Kailash towards the north-west. The journey continues on the good paved road towards Barkha Plain. Finally, the day journey completes reaching the western shore of Lake Manasarover, below the old Chu-Gompa.
An amazing monastery tucked on a high overhanging cave, overnight in a lodge/guest-house close to the shore of holy Manasarover Lake.
Manasarover Lake floats beneath the shadow of holy Kailash, the lake believed been created with the mind of a Hindu God. Hence the name ‘Manas’ comes from ancient Sanskrit words. Manasarover Lake is large and takes about 3-4 days to do the circuit of the lake, where driving takes about four hours. For pilgrims with time offer prayer and worship by the lake shore.

From Darchen, after a pleasant stop, the morning drive leads west of Darchen,
to Taboche. A holy place with grand views of Mt. Kailash West Face, from here the walk starts heading north. Taking slowly on a dry and windswept valley close to a stream with a gradual climb to Dhiraphuk for an overnight stop.
Dhiraphuk, located north of Mt. Kailash, is a small settlement with few shops and lodges, and a small monastery. Dedicated to saint and guru Milarepa of the 11th Century, overnight in a simple lodge accommodation.

LodgeDay 07 Trek to Zutulphuk 4,760 m via Droma-La
Today is the longest and biggest day of the adventure, the morning starts crossing a stream, then with a steep climb. Taking slowly with enough rest as the altitude gains rapidly to reach on top of Dolma-La Pass at 5,630 m. The highest sport, and a holy place, the black boulder nearby represents the goddess Dolma or Droma (Tara).
The Pass is festooned with prayer flags and offerings, this sacred spot is a physical and spiritual point of the pilgrimage. From the top a long descent to the bottom at Lam Chu valley. The walk gets better on a gradual winding path of a few hours to Zutulphuk for the overnight. This small settlement provides simple and basic lodge accommodations and food. The name Zutulphuk means a place with a cave, this is where poet and saint Milarepa meditated. Visitors can witness the footprint of Saint Milarepa on the ceiling of the cave.

LodgeDay 08 Trek near Darchen and drive to Saga via Maium-La
Last and final day walk of the circuit or Kora, the morning starts with a gradual walk of few hours. The trail follows the Karnali River downstream, it flows through the Western zone of Nepal. Slowly the walk ends, on reaching a narrow valley and the gorge. To enter a dramatic exit on the river valley just before Darchen town.
Finally, the walk completes reaching towards, where our transport is parked, and getting on board. Then leaving the holy Mt. Kailash area, the drive heads east, and a long overland journey to reach Saga to stay overnight.

Morning after breakfast, drive to the border of Nepal and Tibet / China after visa formalities. Cross the border bidding farewell to the Tibetan guide and drivers.
Then enter the Rasuwagadhi check-post in Nepal, after visa formalities our Nepali driver and staff receive you. After a short walk and then boarding a vehicle according to group size, the drive reaches Syabrubesi village. From here on winding up to Dhunche, then the road follows downhill towards lower warmer farm villages reaching Trisuli Bazar. The afternoon drive leads past rural villages and towns to Kakani, a scenic spot. After a short refreshing stop, the drive continues for a few hours reaching the hustle and bustle city of Kathmandu.

The best time for Mt. Kailash Overland Journey is from late spring of April and May. Including the autumn/fall from September to early October.
April and May most days with fine crystal clear blue sky, and longer sunlight hours, get cold. During morning, late afternoon, and nighttime, with chances of snow sometimes.
Autumn/fall is another best time for this tour and adventure in Tibet with fine clear days. But days are short due to limited sunlight hours, cold mornings,
and late afternoon till night time. Chances of snowfall on drives and walks during the circuit or Kora of Mt. Kailash. Can enjoy the Kailash tour during the summer times of monsoon from June to early September. Tibetan plateau falls within the rain shadows and the southern monsoon clouds are blocked by the Himalayan ranges. This is why the Tibetan landscape is always dry with less precipitation and partial rain, with not enough moisture.
Food and accommodation till Gyirong or Kyirong and Saga town of good varieties with few western foods. Chinese and Schwan, Tibetan and Nepali Food Menu to enjoy. The main basic meals are fried noodles with eggs or meat and vegetables. Includes noodle soups, stews, boiled or fried rice, and options for meats, eggs, and vegetables. Breads are available during breakfast with tea, coffee, and a variety of canned fruit juice. Besides the common noodles and rice variation, travelers can enjoy dumplings or Mo-Mo, meat or vegetable stuffed.
Accommodation till Kyirong/Gyirong and Saga is good with attached bathrooms and toilets. In high seasons when the lodges and hotels are overbooked have to share common toilets and bathrooms. Most hotels and inns offer hot water and Chinese green tea bags. From Manasarover at Chui Gompa area’s western side of Lake Manasarover, the lodges are simple with basic facilities.
Also, at Dhiraphuk and Zutulphuk, one needs to carry one’s own warm sleeping bags and some snacks.
