Introduction of Upper Mustang Motorcycle Tour

The Upper Mustang Motorcycle Tour is one of Nepal’s most adventurous and culturally rich rides, taking riders through the remote, arid landscapes of the Forbidden Kingdom in northern Nepal. Starting typically from Pokhara or sometimes Kathmandu, the tour follows a combination of paved highways, gravel roads, and rugged off-road trails, traversing deep river gorges, high desert plateaus, and dramatic cliffs. Riders first journey through the scenic Kali Gandaki Gorge, the deepest gorge in the world, before entering Upper Mustang via Kagbeni, where the environment transforms into a stark, wind-swept Trans-Himalayan desert.

The ride continues through ancient villages such as Ghami and Charang, culminating at Lo-Manthang, the walled capital and spiritual heart of the region, perched at about 3,840 meters above sea level. Along the way, travelers encounter centuries-old monasteries, prayer flags, mani walls, and the unique Chhoser Sky Caves, offering a rare glimpse into the spiritual and cultural life of Tibetan Buddhist communities preserved here for hundreds of years

The tour also includes exploration of scenic high passes, sweeping valleys, and panoramic Himalayan vistas, with opportunities to experience local markets, traditional cuisine, and the serene desert-like beauty of Mustang. Due to the region’s remote location, riders must carry essential gear, including helmets, protective clothing, and acclimatization awareness for altitude. Permits such as the Restricted Area Permit (RAP) and ACAP permit are required, adding a layer of logistical planning. The journey typically spans 10–14 days, with riding days ranging from moderate to challenging, making it suitable for riders with some experience on mixed terrain.

The best seasons are spring (March–June) and autumn (September–November), offering clear skies, stable weather, and the best visibility of the surrounding Himalayan peaks. The Upper Mustang Motorcycle Tour uniquely combines adventure riding with cultural immersion, high-altitude landscapes, and the thrill of exploring one of Nepal’s most remote and mystical regions, making it a bucket-list experience for motorcyclists and adventure travelers alike.
